So what if we practiced taking ownership of our losses, the individual and the collective, instead of trying to pawn them off on the universe? Much like in any 12-step program, we must reach radical acceptance—the final stage of grief—before we can heal. “When we’re spiritually bypassing, we’re in denial of reality,” explains Nuur, who recommends speaking acceptance into existence: I don’t like what I see in the world these days, but I accept it as my reality. “Hold space for the pain,” she continues. “We can’t cherry-pick our emotions. None are ‘good’ or ‘bad,’ they just are.” And even those that seem bad may be just as essential to our growth. “Our spiritual nature encompasses yin and yang, light and dark, and both have pieces within the other,” confirms Leo Max, a New York–based hypnotherapist.
As we have witnessed some of this country’s deepest flaws bubble to the surface—health-care inequities, racial and social injustice, access to fair and free elections—it’s perhaps understandable that so many of us would want to emotionally sidestep our realities, if just to maintain a sense of sanity. “Given these complexities and the complexity of feeling multiple feelings at once, feelings that might be difficult to put meaning or rationale to, it’s a lot easier to use spiritual practice to compensate for emotional issues rather than processing them,” confirms Beecroft. But doing so might be a mistake, suggests Deganit Nuur, a clairvoyant and spiritual healer who splits her time between Los Angeles and New York. “Destruction precedes creation, and what we’re experiencing right now is a collective destruction full of uncertainty and discomfort to pave the way for a collective creation. People who are bypassing are skipping steps necessary for true healing, growth, and evolution.”
It’s not too late to radically accept 2020. In the last few hours of this year, I’m not harnessing love and light; I’m harnessing the lingering pain and grief. I’m asking myself the questions we have all been forced to ask of our society: What isn’t working anymore? What do I need to let go of? I’m harnessing gratitude for my mental health, my physical body, and that both came out of this year more resilient than ever. Because when the clock strikes midnight on December 31, these hardships may be in the past, but they won’t be resolved by simply telling myself that “everything happens for a reason.” If there is one thing that this year has taught us, it’s that control and a pain-free life are an illusion. None of us are promised tomorrow, today. Perhaps the faster we can all accept life as it is—full of uncertainties and chaos—the sooner we can begin again.
