“I felt like each and every time I posted on Vine my confidence started growing more and more,” he explains. His platform continued to grow as well, thanks to his authentic approach and sense of humor. “People are drawn to those who are being themselves. They feel like they can relate,” he reflects. After high school, he moved to L.A. to further pursue acting, modeling, and comedy. “There were times I doubted myself. By being Black and gay, I’ve had to really work my ass off to get to where I am. When I meet people who have supported me since the beginning of my journey, that’s what keeps me motivated to keep going,” he says.
Rickey Thompson wasn’t always outgoing. “I was a shy kid,” the comedian-actor-influencer tells Vogue over the phone. “I feel like social media really brought the confidence out of me.” These days, Thompson, 25, is “booked and busy,” (as he reminds us in his Instagram bio), modeling in campaigns for brands like Coach, gracing the cover of Paper magazine, and hosting a podcast, We Said What We Said, alongside his best friend Denzel Dion. “Now I’m a social butterfly,” he says.“I didn’t grow up with a lot of friends,” Thompson says, but making people laugh always brought him closer to his peers: “That’s always been my thing.” His rise to social media fame began in 2013, when he discovered Vine through a friend who encouraged him to share his talents. “I would see all of these other people’s pages growing. I never thought I could do it. I was like, ‘I’m shy. I’m scared about what other people think about me.’” He eventually pushed past those fears.
Gaga, a perennial blonde, stepped out today with her signature peroxide locks a new shade of dark brown. Even the retro styling of it was a total new look for the Chromatica singer: the hair was side-swept, and finished off with soft, bouncy curls. The jury is out on whether it’s a wig or the real deal, but Gaga’s character Reggiani had a distinctive look that was often commented on in the Italian tabloids including her bold costume jewelry and always-coiffed hair so it’s no surprise that Gaga is fully channelling her beauty-wise for the project. It’s also not the first time Gaga has gone dark for a role, either. In 2018’s A Star Is Born, Gaga also went brunette, proving she’s always willing to transform herself in order to nail the part. We wouldn’t be surprised if she truly went brunette for it this time too. Forget method acting it’s all about the transformative dye job.
